September jobs in your garden
Geraniums (pelargoniums) can be propagated at this time of the year from short cuttings. I like to insert 3-4 cuttings around the edge of a clay pot. Keep the compost just moist and they should root in around 3 weeks.
Lawns can be given an autumn plant feed at this time of the year. It is important to use a fertiliser that is high in phosphate and potash to encourage a good root system and to induce winter hardiness. The nitrogen content should be low as we do not want to encourage soft, lush grass growth at this time of the year.
If you want to save seeds from annuals growing in your garden to grow next spring now is the time to do it. Keep an eye on the seed pods and when they are fully developed and starting to dry, remove them from the plant and finish drying them in a paper bag. This is a really easy way to save seeds for annuals such as cosmos, cleome, marigold and many more.
Sow herbs such as parsley, coriander and basil in small pots and grow them on a bright, warm window sill to provide you with fresh herbs through the autumn.
Carry on planting spring flowering bulbs into the garden making sure they are planted three times their depth.
Lift main crop potatoes and when the skins have dried store the tubers in paper sacks in a cool shed.
